Royal Canin and HABRI Partner to Highlight the Importance of Healthy Treating and the Human-Animal Bond

Washington, D.C. (November 18, 2024) — The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) and Royal Canin US, a global leader in health nutrition and one of the billion-dollar brands of Mars, Incorporated, have teamed up to strengthen the human-animal bond by delivering important information to cat and dog owners about their pet’s nutrition and healthy habits when it comes to treating pets.

“Every pet owner has a special bond with their animal and for pet owners, regularly giving treats to their pet plays a big role in strengthening the human-animal bond, showing love and spreading joy[1],” said Dr. Annette Louviere, Scientific Communications Veterinarian for Royal Canin US. “Royal Canin is focused on helping cat and dog owners provide the proper treating and nutrition, which include safe and effective treats for cats and dogs diagnosed with lower urinary tract disease, gastrointestinal upsets, sensitivities to food or for those pets that need weight management. We’re proud to partner with HABRI this holiday season to share education about treating pets right.”

Pets are overwhelmingly considered as members of the family[2], and, just like when shopping for human food, pet owners consider nutritional value as a top concern when selecting the right treats for their pet[3]. While treating pets can strengthen the bond between owners and their animal companions, it’s essential to prioritize their nutrition and health when offering treats to help ensure they maintain a healthy weight and remain compliant to their nutritional needs.

“With holiday season upon us, it’s important to stay conscious of our pet’s diet to keep them at a healthy weight,” said Steven Feldman, President of HABRI. “Our pets are family and keep us healthy and happy, which is why we need to do the same for them. Staying conscious of their diet is one way we can do that while also strengthening the bond.”

While it may be tempting to sneak the occasional piece of human food to our eager companions, providing them with appropriate treats made for them is in their best interest, especially for pets diagnosed with certain conditions, food sensitivities or for those that need weight management. Without proper planning, treats may compromise the efficacy of the veterinary-exclusive diet selected for one’s pet.

HABRI and Royal Canin have partnered together to create educational content, including an article, shareable infographic, a series of social media posts and an informative webinar all intended to provide dog and cat owners with resources on pet nutrition, healthy treating, the

 human-animal bond and more.

“Working with HABRI, our goal at Royal Canin is to encourage conversations with veterinarians about nutrition for overall health and wellness and educate pet owners about the benefits of the human-animal bond,” added Dr. Louviere.

New Research to Study Relationship between Pet Ownership and Youth Development in a Nationally-Representative Dataset

The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) announced today a new research project to determine the role of pet ownership in predicting trajectories of youth development. Funded by a grant from HABRI, researchers at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University aim to determine whether there are systematic differences between families who own pets and those without pets with regard to demographics, social environment, and health status, and if these factors predict patterns of pet ownership over time. “Existing human-animal interaction research is limited in exploring how race, ethnicity, and culture are related to pet ownership, and because the sample analyzed in this study will be nationally representative, we hope to have data on a very diverse group of youth,” said the study’s Principal Investigator, Megan Kiely Mueller, PhD, the Elizabeth Arnold Stevens Junior Professor at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. “This research project will capitalize on a rigorous study design, and a measurement model specifically designed for understanding how environmental experiences influence cognitive and social development and health outcomes.” The goal of the study is to leverage available data from a unique population-based longitudinal study of adolescent development, the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), by analyzing pet ownership information to answer key questions about the relationship between human-animal interaction and trajectories of youth development, including social interaction and support, academic performance, mental health and physical activity. The study includes a baseline cohort of over 11,800 youth enrolled in the ABCD study at 9-10 years of age and their parents/guardians, who will be followed for ten years. In addition to assessing youth development, the study will use the ABCD data to assess if there are systematic differences between families who own...
