Phillips Pet Food & Supplies Supports Human-Animal Bond Research

Washington, D.C. (March 1, 2016) — The Human Animal Bond Research Initiative (HABRI) Foundation announced today that Phillips Pet Food & Supplies has joined the organization’s Steering Committee and made a $25,000 contribution to support research on the human health benefits of companion animals.

“Phillips Pet Food & Supplies is proud to support the HABRI Foundation and its mission to study the healing power of pets,” said Blaine Phillips, CEO of Phillips Pet Food & Supplies. “We represent more than 375 vendors and 700 brands of quality pet products across the nation, and understand that the better we take care of our pets, the better they will take care of us.”

“Phillips Pet Food & Supply is a leader in keeping pets happy and healthy,” said Steven Feldman, Executive Director of HABRI. “By supporting HABRI, Phillips is demonstrating its dedication to the incredible bond pets share with their owners.”

HABRI has assembled a growing body of scientific evidence that pets improve heart health; alleviate depression; increase wellbeing; support child health and development; and contribute to healthy aging. In addition, companion animals can assist in the treatment of a broad range of conditions from post-traumatic stress to Alzheimer’s disease to autism spectrum disorder.

“Phillips Pet Food & Supplies customers, the independent retailers, play a major role in strengthening the human-animal bond,” Phillips added. “We’re going to work together to develop and share even more information about how pets make people, families and communities happier and healthier.”

Email Reminder + Dog = Increased Physical Activity

The Human Animal Bond Research Initiative (HABRI) Foundation today announced the results of a study exploring the effects of an email mediated intervention to increase walking in dog owners and non-dog owners, conducted by researchers at Purdue University and published in the journal Clinical Nursing Research. Findings of the study showed that a simple email intervention sharing the importance of walking and the positive impact of walking on a dog’s health were effective tools to promote walking. These interventions caused participants to increase and maintain dog walking over a 12-month period. Email intervention for non-dog owners also increased weekly minutes of walking compared with baseline measures and control groups, however dog owners accumulated significantly more walking minutes per week than non-dog owners. “Walking is an easy, accessible way to increase physical activity, which is important for the health of people and their pets,” said the principal investigator on the study, Elizabeth A. Richards, PhD, RN, CHES, of Purdue University. “Because an email reminder is so simple, these findings should be easy to replicate, encouraging dog owners and non-dog owners alike to lead more physically active lifestyles.” Participants assigned to the intervention group received a twice-weekly email message for the first four weeks of the intervention followed by weekly email messages for the next eight weeks. The emails attempted to influence confidence through a variety of mechanisms which the investigators hypothesized would directly influence dog walking for dog owners and walking for non-dog owners. Previous studies have supported that dog owners who walk their dogs are motivated to do so because of dog-related support for walking. A number of dog-owner participants in this study anecdotally reported that their ability to maintain behavior change in physical activity was in part due to the dog expecting a walk and conditioning the owner to comply. “With...

Petzey Joins with HABRI to Champion the Human-Animal Bond

The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) today announced that Petzey, a leading on-demand mobile pet telehealth and wellness app, has become an official supporter of HABRI and its scientific research on the symbiotic relationship between people and companion animals. This collaboration is poised to advance scientific study and educate the public on this valuable relationship. “Joining forces with HABRI aligns seamlessly with Petzey’s vision of revolutionizing pet care through our comprehensive virtual network of veterinary professionals,” stated Mike Ortega, CEO of Petzey. “We’re not just committed to transforming the way we care for our pets; we’re dedicated to fostering joy and wellbeing. This partnership amplifies our commitment to supporting the family unit as a whole, recognizing that pets are an integral part of our lives and emotional health. Together with HABRI, we’re excited to embark on this journey, reinforcing the human-animal bond.” HABRI research has found a strong correlation between knowledge of the science of the human-animal bond and positive action when it comes to pet care. Pet owners across the board are increasingly aware of the health benefits of owning a pet. As a result, they feel an increased sense of commitment and are more inclined to take extra steps that benefit their pet’s overall well-being. HABRI survey research also shows an increasing usage and interest in veterinary telemedicine, with 22% of pet owners saying that they had had a virtual appointment and 30% saying they intended to use veterinary telemedicine in the future.[1] “HABRI is grateful for the support of Petzey, a company with a clear mission to keep our pets healthy and the human-animal bond strong,” said Steven Feldman, President of HABRI. Through this synergistic partnership, Petzey and HABRI will elevate the importance of pet-centric healthcare innovation while advocating for the recognition of the emotional, psychological, and...
