Pet Giving Network Issues First Action Alert this Disaster Season

HABRI Collaborates with Greater Good Charities to Mobilize Pet Care Community in Response to Hurricane Helene

Washington, D.C. (October 15, 2024) — The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) Pet Giving Network has issued a call for critical supplies in support of the Hurricane Helene & Hurricane Milton disaster relief efforts. The Pet Giving Network Action Alert requests supplies from pet care companies and organizations that are in critical demand in the affected communities.

“Pets are family, and in times of crisis, they need our help as much as people do,” said Steven Feldman, president of HABRI. “HABRI is proud to manage the Pet Giving Network, a lifeline providing communities with vital resources to care for animals and their owners in need and is grateful for the American Pet Products Association (APPA), World Pet Association (WPA) and the Pet Industry Distributors Association (PIDA) and their members for a strong and longstanding commitment to this important effort.”

“The American Pet Products Association is dedicated to supporting the Pet Giving Network and to helping unite our membership and respond to disasters in the most efficient and effective way,” said Julia Fidenzio-Alicea, Chief Legal Officer, American Pet Products Association (APPA).

With active natural disasters, the Pet Giving Network is stepping up to ensure that pets across the country receive the critical support they need during emergencies. The Pet Giving Network is a collaboration between HABRI and Greater Good Charities, a non-profit organization that works to provide in-kind supplies, donations and programmatic support to those in need. The Pet Giving Network connects pet product companies, non-profit organizations, and shelters to provide essential supplies, such as food, bedding, and medical care, to animals affected by natural disasters.

When hurricanes, floods, and wildfires strike, animal shelters can quickly become overwhelmed, leaving vulnerable pets in urgent need. The Pet Giving Network bridges the gap by facilitating donations from companies in the pet care community and distributing supplies to shelters in impacted areas. This swift response helps ensure the safety and well-being of animals displaced or in distress.

“If you are part of a pet care company or organization that can donate pet food, toys, medicines, crates, litter or other supplies, please consider joining the Pet Giving Network to ensure your donation meets the specific needs of those impacted,” added Vic Mason, president, World Pet Association (WPA).

Pet and Women Safety (PAWS) Act Funding Now Available: Aid for Survivors of Domestic Violence and their Pets Arrives at Critical Time

The PAWS Act Coalition, a group of nonprofit and for-profit organizations, is working to raise awareness among the domestic violence shelter community of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Emergency and Transitional Pet Shelter and Housing Assistance Grant Program. This program will support shelter and transitional housing services for survivors of domestic violence and their companion animals, which was made possible by the passage of the Pet and Women Safety (PAWS) Act by Congress in 2018. “The PAWS Act funding and new grants mark an important milestone in keeping more pets and their families together,” said Nina Leigh Krueger, president of Nestlé Purina PetCare. “Purina is committed to continuing to work alongside our partners to increase the number of pet-friendly domestic violence shelters so families and their pets can safely leave an abusive situation and heal together.” “With incidents of domestic violence increasing as a result of coronavirus stay-at-home orders, the need for pet-friendly sheltering will also grow, and this funding could not have come at a better time,” said Steven Feldman, Executive Director of the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI). “HABRI is proud to have participated in this two-plus year effort to support the successful implementation of the lifesaving PAWS Act. The PAWS Act Coalition and many in the greater pet care community have worked hard to make this grant program a reality.” The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) will provide up to five grants of $400,000 each, to begin on October 1, 2020. The primary goal of this funding is to support shelter and transitional housing services for survivors of domestic violence and their companion animals. With these grants, the DOJ seeks to increase the number of shelter beds and transitional housing options to meet the needs of domestic violence survivors who need shelter or housing for them and their companion animals. Funding provided by this grant will also provide...

Royal Canin and HABRI Partner to Highlight the Importance of Healthy Treating and the Human-Animal Bond

The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) and Royal Canin US, a global leader in health nutrition and one of the billion-dollar brands of Mars, Incorporated, have teamed up to strengthen the human-animal bond by delivering important information to cat and dog owners about their pet’s nutrition and healthy habits when it comes to treating pets. “Every pet owner has a special bond with their animal and for pet owners, regularly giving treats to their pet plays a big role in strengthening the human-animal bond, showing love and spreading joy[1],” said Dr. Annette Louviere, Scientific Communications Veterinarian for Royal Canin US. “Royal Canin is focused on helping cat and dog owners provide the proper treating and nutrition, which include safe and effective treats for cats and dogs diagnosed with lower urinary tract disease, gastrointestinal upsets, sensitivities to food or for those pets that need weight management. We’re proud to partner with HABRI this holiday season to share education about treating pets right.” Pets are overwhelmingly considered as members of the family[2], and, just like when shopping for human food, pet owners consider nutritional value as a top concern when selecting the right treats for their pet[3]. While treating pets can strengthen the bond between owners and their animal companions, it’s essential to prioritize their nutrition and health when offering treats to help ensure they maintain a healthy weight and remain compliant to their nutritional needs. “With holiday season upon us, it’s important to stay conscious of our pet’s diet to keep them at a healthy weight,” said Steven Feldman, President of HABRI. “Our pets are family and keep us healthy and happy, which is why we need to do the same for them. Staying conscious of their diet is one way we can do that while also strengthening the bond.” While it may be tempting to sneak the occasional piece of human food to our eager companions, providing them with appropriate...

New Research to Help Meet the Needs of Cancer Survivors with Pets

The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) today announced funding for a new research project that will explore the challenges cancer survivors encounter in caring for their pets throughout the course of their treatment and recovery with the goal of informing the development of clinical assessments and interventions to better address their pet-related needs. The funding was awarded to a team of researchers at Colorado State University co-led by Dr. Jennifer Currin-McCulloch and Dr. Lori Kogan. Research suggests that pet ownership offers emotional support and connection for cancer survivors. Although there are many documented benefits of pet ownership for this population, there are critical gaps in knowledge about the benefits or practical day-to-day strains pets may create for survivors’ physical and emotional well-being. This project’s overall objective is to explore the benefits, stressors, and social support structures survivors encounter in caring for their pets under the One Health framework, which emphasizes a collaborative, cross-disciplinary approach to public health. “Cancer is one of the most common illnesses in the United States, and while the impact of human social support on cancer survivors is well documented, the influence of pets on survivors’ wellbeing is not,” explained Dr. Currin-McCulloch. “In conducting this research, we hope to help cancer survivors enjoy the benefits of their relationship with their pet by minimizing the stress involved with meeting their pets’ needs during their survivorship trajectory.” This study will employ an online mixed methods survey to identify if and how pets serve as emotional support and/or stressors for cancer survivors, and how support systems can promote their ability to provide for their pets’ physical and emotional well-being. The researchers will build on these survey results by conducting focus groups to explore how survivors support their pets and what gaps exist in pet-related...
